Carbon Footprint & Carbon Budgets

WHAT DO I COVER IN A KEYNOTE TALK ABOUT CARBON FOOTPRINT AND CARBON BUDGETS?

This is a particularly important subject for businesses, and most remain ignorant of changes already underway, which will, in the coming years, drastically affect all businesses, some with devastating results.

Within this evolving talk, I cover an introduction to carbon footprint. I offer a definition of carbon footprint and its significance in measuring individual and organizational environmental impact. I explain how carbon footprints are calculated, covering the different types of emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3).

I then offer some insight on understanding carbon budgets in the context of the sector my audience operates in. I might provide another definition of carbon budgets and their role in limiting global warming to targets set by the Paris Agreement. (Each company management team should already be having a discussion on the global carbon budget and how it translates to regional and national targets for their own operations).

I share information on sources of carbon emissions, with an overview of the major sources, including energy production, transportation, agriculture, and industrial processes. It’s really a massive chain of emissions we need to consider, not just what happens within our own office or factory walls. I often provide examples of everyday activities that contribute to personal and organizational carbon footprints within the workplace.

I include a section on the impacts of high carbon footprints, and why they are of particular concern, with an explanation of the environmental, economic, and social impacts of high carbon emissions. I will obviously touch on climate change consequences, such as extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and biodiversity loss.

Then, I get a little technical with a section on the tools and methods for measuring carbon footprints, which vary by region and even type of business. I might include some methodologies used to calculate carbon footprints, such as online calculators and lifecycle assessments, or perhaps even a demonstration of frameworks and software used by businesses to track and report emissions.

I include a call to action and discuss the importance of developing strategies for reducing carbon footprints now. I share some practical tips, such as energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and sustainable practices. If possible and available, I will share some case studies of organizations that have successfully reduced their emissions, similar to the sector my guests are from.

I cover the importance of carbon offsetting, offering an explanation of carbon offsetting and how it works to balance unavoidable emissions.

I end the talk with some future trends and global initiatives, sharing emerging technologies and practices aimed at achieving carbon neutrality.
