This month, a dear colleague of mine was subjected to a cybercrime, a social engineering attack. They managed to steal a substantial amount of funds from her Nedbank account. Education around online and digital safety is the reason my joint venture partner and I started cyberdefenders.co.za.

This month, I was very sad to hear of the POISONING INCIDENT in Mpumalanga, which resulted in the death of over 100 critically endangered vultures, including breeding adults and various species. The deaths were confirmed through GPS tracking, and their bodies were found near a carcass, with no parts taken, suggesting the poisoning was deliberate. Samples are being tested to identify the toxin.

It is always intriguing to get updates on money flowing into Africa, especially for startups. For example, this month, Stitch, a payments infrastructure company based in South Africa, has raised $55 million from current investors to support the expansion of its comprehensive payment solutions throughout the continent. Some people are not thinking for at least 30% of the day. Perhaps you have met some of them? This is an interesting article I want to share about a subject I study often—humans! It’s all about why and what happens when our minds go blank.

This month, South African Airways experienced a significant cyber event (which started on the 3rd of May) that temporarily disrupted access to its website, mobile app, and internal systems. The airline activated its disaster management and business continuity protocols, and they apparently managed to contain the breach and restore system functionality within the same day.

It made me think about what might happen if an airplane’s navigation was hacked. It’s a probable target.

The last few weeks, I have been extremely busy traveling at the request of clients to present on the future of their industries.

One such client was an innovative insurance company, another was an international accounting and auditing firm, and another was a client working with the auction industry, to name just a some.

It’s hard for museums to stay afloat. This one should be fine, then — either way.
I was happy to learn about Africa’s First Submarine Museum! It was recently unveiled in Simon’s Town—a little town I lived in for one year! This museum features the SAS Assegaai, a retired Daphne-class submarine from the South African Navy. (A Daphne-class submarine is a type of diesel-electric attack submarine designed and built in France between the late 1950s and 1960s, primarily used for anti-submarine warfare, reconnaissance, and patrolling duties.)

SAS Assegaai weighs around 700 tons and was moved to its new site in July 2024 following careful planning and contributions from over 150 sponsors and donors.

The future of search. It should blow your mind!

My colleague this month shared a very interesting SEO-related update.

The big change is that search is taking information from your site and displaying it in search results. Depending on settings, it can take information from multiple sites.

The concern my colleague had is that if the information is offered without a searcher having to go to a website, won’t website traffic drop? Short answer: yes, it will.

Search is evolving a lot! We need to keep an eye on the changes taking place at Google.
