Some wonderful and very clever researchers from Kyoto University are developing a groundbreaking treatment for tooth regrowth, building on findings from studies on USAG-1, an antibody that inhibits tooth growth in ferrets and mice.
These clever people in 2021, they discovered a monoclonal antibody capable of disrupting USAG-1’s interaction with bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), which promotes tooth growth. With no side effects reported in animal studies, the treatment begun trials on humans in September, involving 30 men ages 30 to 64, each missing at least one tooth.
The solution is administered intravenously, the trial aims to prove the drug’s effectiveness and safety. If successful, Kitano Hospital plans to extend treatment by 2030 to patients aged 2 to 7 who are missing several teeth, ultimately making the treatment available for anyone with tooth loss.

During the company’s fifth Starship test flight, SpaceX successfully caught the spacecraft’s Super Heavy booster using its “Mechazilla” tower, an unbelievable feat of engineering that required an immense amount of precision and experience.

AI being used by police services is an especially interesting concept if you think about applying it here in South Africa.
AI is already being integrated into police departments in California, including East Palo Alto, to assist in drafting reports using AI tools like Axon’s Draft One. So basically to help with their paperwork.
The USA is doing this to address staffing shortages and to help officers allocate more time to fieldwork.
Interesting the solution here was not to hire more people?
Other experts express concerns about AI’s increasing role in the criminal justice system, pointing out potential issues with reliability and the impact on legal processes, such as cross-examination, and I am personally still worried about the risk of AI bias based on the data it learns from.

There has been success and good news for those who suffer from type 2 diabetes. A 25-year-old woman with type 1 diabetes has become the first patient to produce her own insulin after receiving a transplant of reprogrammed stem cells derived from her own body. After the transplant, she reported enjoying a yummier diet that includes sugar again, and her blood glucose levels stabilized without the need for insulin. This pioneering procedure, validated by researchers, has demonstrated the potential to reverse diabetes, with positive outcomes noted in her case and in a separate trial involving a 59-year-old man with type 2 diabetes. This is certainly going to be a major influence for our society.

Some interesting innovation news and the use of Gravity!
The concept of ‘Gravity’ as a source of power or innovation has always been something I have researched and have a very keen interest on.
It was interesting for me to learn that some researchers in Saudi Arabia have developed a new and passive cooling device that collects atmospheric water to cool solar cells without using electricity.
This innovation, led by KAUST Professor Qiaoqiang Gan and his team, uses gravity and economical materials.
The device employs a lubricant coating that effectively detaches water from the surface, eliminating the need for active condensate collection.
Their sustainable technology reduces operational costs by avoiding electricity consumption and maintenance, as it lacks mechanical components. Tested in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia, it offers significant economic and environmental benefits, promising to advance renewable energy and water harvesting in arid regions.
