Bite size updates on the real important stuff related to Tech, Trends, Business and the Planet.

Let me tackle the hype around changes to Whats@pp. The App is part of F@cebook and that company has had access to your information for a very long time. It is progress they are actually asking for permission now. My summary on the changes:

  • F@cebook hosted services and products are going to appear more on your phone.
  • The information they are going to use a lot of is reported to be related to your device and e-connection.
  • You have a deadline of Feb to accept their permission request, or you can expect services to be limited.
  • I do not think we need to panic and use another service, even if a very rich ex-South African has suggested we do so.

Climate Change is a subject that gets far too little attention and I wanted to let everyone know there is a major online conference happening, see:www.cas2021.com. I will be joining, and afterwards I will give you the latest ‘Tea’ on the situation.

I finished a very good book in the holidays called ‘How to speak science.’ It is the one with the goat on the cover. My take away from this excellent book is:

  • The size of something influences which scientific theory we use to explain how it behaves. Small, medium and large things all have their own rules. (It turns out size does matter.)
  • Nothing in the Universe is ever still. Not ever.
  • Everything that ever was, is, or will be, will all happen and exist within ‘Time’. No time = no matter.
  • Gravity is NOT a force, it is actually an interaction between density and space-time. I’ll be spending some time trying to wrap my mind around what this means. Maybe one of my clever Followers can help me understand?

Trash talk.

Did you know that around 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean every year? 90% of that comes from only 10 rivers in the World. They are: the Yangtze, Indus, Yellow, Hai He, Ganges, Pearl, Amur, Mekong, the Nile and the Niger. There are around 165 major rivers on the planet. People who pollute, have a degraded respect for themselves, their community and the planet.

I need to recommend a web series a friend of mine by the name of Marchand got me into called ‘Kurzgesagt.’ They cover all sorts of extremely interesting subjects. If I could rate this series between 1 and 10, 1 being bad, and 10 being brilliant, I would give it an 11. It is that good! Start with this show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhFK5_Nx9xY

News from Africa. I really do love this continent which is why I focus on it. Siemens Gamesa has recently announced it will be involved in building 29 wind turbines in Ethiopia. Wonderful! Did you know Ethiopia has nearly double South Africa’s population and is one of the fastest growing economies in the area?

To end this post: let me quickly mention a project I am involved with. Most people will agree that ‘lawyers’ in general are costly, slow to respond to emails and we don’t use them unless we are in an unpleasant situation. I am helping a Law Firm use Tech to provide quick access and services to South Africans (both for private and commercial matters). I am thrilled to be able to say their prices are extremely good, they respond quickly and the lawyers are friendly (they let me do a selfie with them). Together we rolling out innovative things like E-consults (from R450) which means you can get help while never having to leave your couch! They even use Whats@pp! Interested, check out: www.awinc.co.za

A reminder I will be in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Bonjaneni and Johannesburg over the next 4 weeks to meet innovative people. Would love to hear where my followers live and what they do, please leave a comment.

That’s it for this post. Be a Future Thinker!
