Nugget (18 January 2021)

Here are some yummy 'Nuggets' for you! You know, bite size updates on the real important stuff related to Tech, Trends, Business and the Planet.

Let’s go…

Gartner has said monies being spent on ‘ear-worn’ tech devices increased by 124% last year to $32.7 billion and is expected to reach $39.2 billion this year. That’s a lot of Moola, certainly more than any pandemic relief fund. See the image in the post to see what other gadgets are ‘spend trending’.

Innovation in SA.

Spur is not disappointing us! Franchisees (people who own the branches) carry extreme costs to keep their doors open during a lock down. They have come up with a clever idea, and what appears to be happening is they will boost their income using their 550+ kitchens to do deals via online trade and delivery with their new “virtual, online, delivery-only brands’’ like: The Goodie Box, Pizza Pug and Reel Sushi. This helps save jobs, rides a tech trend and deserves a thumbs up from me and other Future Thinkers! Spursteak Ranches #spur

I, and many others, believe Internet access should be a basic human right. I won’t go into the reasons in this post, but, I did learn that over $100 billion is needed over the next decade to achieve universal internet coverage in Africa by 2030.

Meanwhile, I have heard about Lesotho and Zimbabwe implementing a Telco Traffic Monitoring System. I will keep an eye on this news. I don’t like Governments having control over any part of the Internet, no matter what is reported by their PR departments.

Did you know that a lot of the communication infrastructure in Africa comes from China? Their investment has increased +/-40% year on year over the last decade. We need to support local businesses to create jobs and save the South African economy. A cheaper product today, might come at the cost of Tomorrow. As my friend Marnus Broodryk (the remarkable business man, see image post of us celebrating the end of 2020) would say: “we don’t need more jobs we need more entrepreneurs.”

Very quick! Whats@pp update: they have changed their roll out plans for the ‘policy’ which has upset so many people. It will be delayed and there will be more consultation before being fully implemented. This is good progress and I don’t believe we need to be too concerned.

Renewable energy production in Africa is still very low despite a lot of progress. A recent article I read said it is expected to make up only 10% of Africa's electricity generation by the year 2030. Later this week I will introduce you to a South African company who you might want to try to use to power your home or office, especially considering the fact that South Africa’s power grid capacity is at about 50% at the moment and Eskom’s ‘three month outlook report’ can only be interpreted to confirm there will be load shedding most weeks until the end of April! This will be devastating for our economy.

Wise words: ‘You don’t get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression.’ This is especially true with social media and website marketing. Please don’t forget these are services I offer. See: https://www.jeanpierremurraykline.co.za/servicesandrates...

Bitc0in Miners in Iran are being blamed for electricity blackouts! This is because their special computers are using huge amounts of electricity.

Nature talk!

There is a tiny freshwater animal called a Hydra. It has no brain, but that does not mean it cannot teach us something. The study of this little creature has produced evidence that a brain is not needed to sleep at all. Very interesting indeed. The tests they did unfortunately resulted in the little creature suffering from sleep deprivation. I wish humans would stop using animals for tests.

Let’s end this post on a very positive Nugget. According to ‘Lonely Planet’, Uganda’s mountain gorilla population has experienced a baby boom, well, a good boost! There are only about 100000 + in the World today. Have any of you ever watched the movie called Gorillas in the Mist? It’s a very old film, but worth the watch.
