You don’t need to know who Captain Spock is to appreciate Space opportunities. There are already economists, researchers and clever people factoring it into their calculations just how ‘Space’ will affect our economies, society and future. Is this because they have been awarded some grant money and have nothing better to do?

I would argue with great vigour that there really is something to consider and so would the 1.5 million people employed either directly or indirectly at the Space Data Association, in Private Sector Initiatives, at Academic Institutions and the National and International Space Agencies. Even South Africa and several other countries in Africa have established space agencies and businesses. With that said, perhaps you should get up to speed with the subject? I mean, there has to be more to innovation than AI and most people have heard that Space is the final frontier. It will affect future businesses and even our homes. So, without further ado, let’s blast off and may the Force be with us.

Part of this chapter I adapted from work I did for a South African client and therefore it includes quite a bit about making money in space, specifically with mining off World. My work was presented at a local mining conference and you can see some of that on my Youtube channel. But let’s take a step back and give you some real context on this subject.

What was the real force that managed to get humanity into space in 1961? The answer is ‘ego’. Yes, the posturing between America and Russia were the major influences in slingshotting man into infinity and beyond. New sciences, advancements in communication, innovation for war and humanity’s natural desire to explore all played a part.

Our first space adventures needed a massive cash injection and man did it get one! The USA spent around 25 billion USD to get ‘man’ to the moon. Back then and even now, that is an absurd amount of money. Russia spent a fortune as well on the Soviet Union’s Vostok program, which won them the badge of honour: The 1st country to get ‘man’ into space.

There has been a total of 6 successful manned missions to the moon, but it’s been near ‘radio silence’ since 1972. Why? Well, they tried to open a restaurant on the moon, but the customers complained that while the food was great there was no atmosphere. Dad jokes aside. There are a few good reasons, but the most fundamental reason is that most countries had a shift in priorities. Today we are experiencing a revitalized interest in the concept of ‘space’ for its potential resources and slowly starting to appreciate that life on Earth actually needs ‘space’. Literally and figuratively.

So where does ‘space’ actually start? Well, that’s debated, but roughly between 80-100 kilometers from land. It’s called the Kármán line, and when you think about it, the Kármán line is not really that far away, right? Once in space, the first things we will come across are satellites and we have three types. The first are grouped together in an area of space called LEO, which stands for low Earth orbit, found between 120-2000 kilometers above us. Then you get MEO, which stands for medium Earth orbit, between 2000 kilometers and 36 000 kilometers and then finally GEO, which stands for geostationary orbit, where we find satellites that stay in a fixed position above Earth, at roughly 35 786 kilometers.

Travelling at 28 000 kilometers per hour is the International Space Station, or ISS for short. This 150 billion USD multipurpose space station can be found 400 kilometers above our heads. In 2001, Pizza Hut became the first company to deliver pizza to a space station at a cost of 1 million USD. It was cold by the time it got there. Pizza is not the strangest thing we have sent to space; there is an old Tesla car orbiting the sun, which used to belong to Elon Musk and also some Lego and Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber. The first creature we ever sent to space were some fruit flies. The vast majority of manmade things orbiting us is space junk and I go into a little more info about this in my final chapter of this book. Suffice to say for now, there are many things above our heads and we can be mooning on.

I meant, moving on. The first natural body closest to us is our Moon. (Close does not sound like an ‘apt’ description when it’s a whopping 384 400 kilometers away!) This distance, in spite of its massive size, is still only a fraction of a fraction of the immense overall size space is within our observable universe. The total size is at such a scale, it is impossible for a human to comprehend, never mind one having to describe it in a chapter. There really is a lot of space out there and more than we could ever explore in humanity’s entire existence. (Not unless we can slow down time and the degradation of the universe itself). Still, there is so much we can explore and possibilities are still infinite.

Unfortunately, other than Musk and a few other billionaires with some low-orbit tourist businesses such as ULA, Arianespace, Blue Origin, Axiom and Ispace, there has not been much action at all. Why? That is an excellent question and we need to answer this.

One of the reasons is people feel space adventures are elitist and a waste of money when we have other things to focus on here on Earth. You might even agree with this. I probably wouldn’t argue with you much because there really are ample issues here on our own planet to tackle before fussing about what’s happening on another planet or some random asteroid. But, what many people do not know is that without our pursuit of space adventures, we might not have many very important things here on Earth, for example: telemedicine, bone loss measurement techniques, automated insulin pumps, advanced baby formula, data compression algorithms, LED lighting, or digital image sensors. Gosh, we wouldn’t even be able to navigate, communicate, or even entertain ourselves!

We have some space laws. There is the Outer Space Treaty, which was signed in 1967 by the UK, USA, and Russia. Its objective is to govern the exploration of space and all celestial bodies and somehow prohibit the placement of nuclear weapons in space. It would be nice if we could get the same done here on earth. This law says that the Moon and other celestial bodies are only to be used for peaceful purposes and cannot be claimed by any one country.

Then there is the Rescue Agreement signed in 1968 that requires any able country to assist astronauts in distress and return them back to their home country. It also obligates nations to return space objects that land on their territory to the ‘owning nation’. The Liability Convention was signed in 1972 and maps out the liability of countries for damage caused by their space objects.

The Registration Convention, signed in 1976, requires countries to register space objects with the United Nations, offering details about their orbital parameters and the general function of the spacecraft.

Finally, there is the Moon Agreement. It has provisions of the Outer Space Treaty to the Moon and other celestial bodies, but few countries have ratified it, limiting its effectiveness.

What is important to know about ‘space law’ is that out of all the ‘agreements’ in place, they really have no bearing on a business or company. In fact, there are some massive loopholes, or should we say blackholes? One is the fact that there is no explicit law to address the ownership of resources extracted from space. There are some countries currently trying to establish legal frameworks for private companies to own and use space resources, but how on earth would it ever be ‘policed’? The current ‘works of law’ underway include the U.S. Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act, signed into law in 2015, allowing U.S. citizens and companies to own resources they extract from celestial bodies, including asteroids and the Moon. In 2017, Luxembourg created and signed a similar Act. Additionally, the United Arab Emirates has developed legislation for space resource activities, encouraging commercial exploration and utilization. Basically, right now, if you find diamonds in space and you collect them, bring them down to Earth, there is no law to say they do not belong to you. There is no ratified global law to stop you.

Space adventures and innovations of any sort will largely be championed and funded by business in the future, but it’s not just about business. It is impossible for humanity to progress without using space. Space must be pursued for modern life on Earth to continue and excel. Scientific discovery and knowledge, technological advancement, economic growth and industry development will stall if we limit ourselves to what is only on Earth. Social buy in by communities on the importance and relevance of ‘space’ is going to be one of the largest hurdles in the coming decade and education is key.

People must link the future with the present and learning things like Memory Foam mattresses, Non-stick Cookware and even smoke detectors, are there because of Space Travel.

Of course, most people reading this book are businesspeople, so let me ensure I zone in on the fact that Space is a real business opportunity. One needs to Future Think and start to propose solutions needed for space projects. They do not need to be complicated or costly. Simple ideas can still make significant financial return.

One of the most seemingly trivial yet commercially successful inventions stemming from space technology is the Velcro fastener. It was developed by Swiss engineer George de Mestral way back in the 1940s and Velcro gained significant attention and application in space programs due to its durability and convenience in zero-gravity environments. While the invention was not specifically designed for space, its use in NASA missions, particularly for securing equipment and clothing, greatly enhanced its popularity and as many know now, it is a staple across various industries, including fashion, footwear and household products, resulting in substantial financial success. The original patent for the hook-and-loop fastener, granted to George de Mestral has, of course, since expired, but nonetheless, its historical and economic impact has been immense with the company (which evolved from a small business into a global entity), generating 93 million USD in revenue by 1988 and exceeding 298 million USD by 2008.

A business is often where you find future thinkers and change champions, making a company a far better equipped entity to pursue economic, technological, and commercial opportunities in Space, especially compared to governments. It’s also reasonable to say that a business is more likely to push through red tape, champion partnerships and sort out rocky relations with tardy or uninspired government departments. So, other than Velcro, what opportunities are there?

Space tourism offers extremely unique opportunities, launching a new era of adventures like never seen before. Imagine being a travel agent for Space Tours! I do believe within the next 30-80 years booking a trip off-planet will share a similar process to that of visiting Europe. (Let’s hope there are no visas!).

Once we are able to look back at Earth from a distance, we will gain a new and perhaps somewhat emotional perspective on just how extremely rare our planet is and then perhaps, finally, we will take better care of it and one another.

The space tourism market is anticipated to expand considerably, with estimates suggesting a rise from approximately $1-2 billion (USD) in the mid-2020s to tens of billions by the early 2030s. Projections include $19 billion by 2032 (43.6% CAGR), $25-47 billion by 2034 (around 40-45% CAGR), or possibly reaching $10 billion by 2030. So, lots of moola!

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.6″ header_font=”||||||||” header_2_font=”–et_global_heading_font|600||on|||||” header_2_text_color=”#000000″ header_2_font_size=”60px” header_2_line_height=”1.2em” module_alignment=”right” header_2_font_size_tablet=”40px” header_2_font_size_phone=”25px” header_2_font_size_last_edited=”on|desktop” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Table of Contents

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_blurb title=”14 Chapters” use_icon=”on” font_icon=”||divi||400″ icon_color=”#153d63″ icon_placement=”left” image_icon_width=”25px” content_max_width=”100%” _builder_version=”4.27.6″ header_font=”Montserrat|700|||||||” header_font_size=”16px” header_line_height=”1.5em” body_font=”|700|||||||” width=”100%” animation=”off” icon_font_size=”25px” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

148 Pages

[/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.16″ text_font=”||||||||” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”1.8em” text_orientation=”justified” text_font_size_tablet=”16px” text_font_size_phone=”14px” text_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” text_line_height_tablet=”1.8em” text_line_height_phone=”1.7em” text_line_height_last_edited=”off|phone” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

It’s good to get an introduction.

MAYBE I LIED?
