E-Freedom & Online Censorship

WHAT DO I COVER IN A KEYNOTE TALK ABOUT E-FREEDOM AND ONLINE CENSORSHIP?

The e-world is unfortunately not a free space. My keynote talk on E-Freedom and Online Censorship highlights several concerns regarding freedom of speech and control by governments and corporations on where, when, how, and what we share about our personal opinions and points of view. I customize the talk based on the audience, but I might include any of the following components.

A Definition of E-Freedom. I introduce the concept of e-freedom, emphasizing the importance of freedom of expression in digital spaces and the role of the internet in promoting democracy and equal rights for all.

I share a Current Landscape, which is unfortunately not a pretty picture at the moment. I analyze the current state of online censorship globally, including examples of countries with strict censorship laws and the impact on freedom of speech.

I include Methods of Censorship and discuss which are used by governments and corporations, such as content filtering, website blocking, and surveillance.

I normally add a section in my talk on the Impact on Society. It’s important to explore how online censorship affects journalism, activism, and the flow of information. I address the consequences for marginalized communities and dissenting voices.

If time allows, I like to include some information on Legal Frameworks and examine existing laws and regulations surrounding online speech and censorship, including international human rights standards.

Technological solutions to the challenges are already available, and I like to take a moment to highlight technologies that promote e-freedom, such as VPNs, encryption, and decentralized platforms. There is, however, a fine line to balance because these same technologies can allow for abuse to run rampant.

I believe we should lead by example, and I like to talk about e-Activism and e-Advocacy. There are some wonderful examples of successful campaigns against censorship and the role of NGOs and civil society in defending online freedoms.

The Future. I need to address the evolving landscape of censorship, including the implications of AI and machine learning in content moderation and the need for robust policies that protect free speech. Regardless, a call to action encouraging my audience to engage in advocacy for e-freedom, support organizations fighting against censorship, and promoting digital literacy and good e-behaviour is something I also include.
