Ethical and Future Customers & Businesses

WHAT DO I COVER IN A KEYNOTE TALK ABOUT ETHICAL AND FUTURE CUSTOMERS AND BUSINESSES?

Is business good, or is it good business? Business and its customers, I really believe, are catalysts for change, a largely untapped resource to shift the ethics of our society. This requires a new way of thinking, largely about how we produce and from where we consume. That is largely what this keynote talk is about, but I might include any of these subjects:

Understanding Ethical Consumerism. I offer a definition and rise of ethical consumerism in recent years. I talk about the factors driving consumers to make ethical purchasing decisions, such as environmental concerns, social responsibility, and corporate transparency. I really enjoy sharing examples from South Africa on this topic.

I discuss the impact of technology on consumer expectations and how technology is shaping expectations around ethics (e.g., data privacy, transparency, accountability, and reviews). I address the role of social media in amplifying consumer voices and holding businesses accountable.

I include a section about future sustainable business practices. I cover strategies for businesses to adopt sustainable practices that resonate with future customers well in advance. Where possible, I also share some case studies showcasing companies that have successfully transitioned to sustainable operations within the sector applicable to my audience.

I talk about diversity and inclusion in business, and this is an especially important subject in South Africa. The importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and its impact on customer perception has not been realized, let alone understood. Businesses can be used as tools to foster an inclusive culture that attracts and retains future customers and realigns our societies’ moral compass.

If time allows, I might discuss the subject of ethics in AI and automation. It’s often fun to explore the ethical implications of using AI and automation in consumer interactions and decision-making while also focusing on maintaining human values and ethics in an increasingly automated business landscape.

I normally include a section about consumer education and engagement. We have to upskill the current workforce and prepare businesses for future employees. The business of the future will play a part in educating consumers about ethical issues and encouraging responsible behavior.

I end this talk by covering future trends in consumer behavior, offering my predictions for how consumer values and behaviors may evolve in the coming years. There is a lot to cover in this section, such as the impact of emerging trends on business strategies and marketing, building trust and loyalty, the factors that contribute to consumer trust in brands, and balancing short-term gains with long-term sustainable practices.
