Albania’s Flamingo Revolution: Luxury Resorts, Corruption & Wildlife (August 2026)

Thousands of their citizens have taken to the streets along the southern coast to protest a very controversial luxury resort project backed by Affinity Partners, an investment firm founded by Jared Kushner, with support from Ivanka Trump.

What began as an environmental concern appears to have evolved into the largest anti-corruption movement Albania has witnessed since the fall of communism in 1991!

Anti-corruption?

What’s that got to do with a resort and some flamingos? I’ll get onto that now. First of all, let me complain about the environmental destruction in protected zones. At the heart of the controversy is a proposed complex valued between $1.4 billion and $1.6 billion that targets Sazan Island, a former military base, and the Vjosa-Narta Lagoon near Zvërnec. This coastal area is recognized as a vital wetland ecosystem along the Adriatic Flyway, home to over 250 bird species and endangered wildlife, including loggerhead sea turtles and the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal. The lagoon in the area serves as a sanctuary for pink flamingos, and the reason protesters adopted the bird as their symbol, but who doesn’t love a flamingo?

Tensions escalated dramatically this month when construction companies began clearing access roads without formal environmental reviews, directly impacting fragile habitats during peak wildlife breeding seasons. This is, of course, totally unacceptable! Public outrage really intensified after a podcast interview in which Ivanka Trump referred to the public land as a “private island” that she and Kushner had “discovered” during a boating trip. The audacity!

Now, onto the shady land deals and legal fallout. The land intended for the mega-resort is drenched in controversy. Local village elders in Zvërnec claim the land was historically theirs, having been confiscated during communism and later fraudulently sold through opaque dealings. In response, Albania’s Special Anti-Corruption Structure has launched a formal investigation, and some Prosecutors have frozen the assets of local companies involved in the deal, citing allegations of forged property titles and deliberate legislative changes to bypass ecological protections for political insiders.

Meanwhile the geopolitical and government stance, in spite of daily outcry and increasing international scrutiny, has Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama steadfastly defending the Kushner-led investment, framing it as a “once-in-a-generation” economic opportunity that promises to modernize Albania’s tourism sector, create jobs, and enhance the country’s global economic standing. Etc etc etc … we have all heard this script before. He has also dismissed the environmental concerns, accusing both international media and domestic opposition of politicizing the issue using local wildlife as pawns against the U.S. Trump administration – and we all know how the Trump administration likes to avoid the subject of islands?

The ongoing controversy poses a real threat to Albania’s aspirations for European Union membership, and rightfully so! The European Commission has issued formal warnings reminding them all that projects violating international ecological treaties, such as Natura 2000, could jeopardize Albania’s EU aspirations.

As for the corruption allegations surrounding Jared Kushner’s luxury resort, they are deeply systemic, involving customized law-making, suspected property title forgery, and money-laundering probes into the project’s local partners. Such shenanigans, and all the while, no one cares a hoot for the animals.

As for Ballito, as with many other places in South Africa, we are denying the human-Wildlife Conflict and “State Capture” of Nature underway… while we enjoy our security complexes, pools, malls and roads, forcing the likes of vervet monkeys to decent to the levels of scavenges and pests, or suffer the fate of our security dogs or power lines.
